Facts about LGBT Pride Month 2021
The lesbian, gay, bisexual and
transgender community comes together for a month-long celebration of respect,
diversity, acceptance, love and shameless self-pride every summer in the United States.
Based on the Library of Congress, the
celebration is intended to acknowledge the extensive influence and impact that
LGBT individuals and supporters have on history in the United States and across
the globe.
The month of June was chosen for
LGBT Pride Month to honor the riots held by members of the LGBT community
against a police raid happened at the Stonewall Inn in New York City on June
28, 1969.
This event draws millions of participants
from around the world every year and their usual activities are pride parades, parties,
concerts, marches, and workshops.
The rainbow LGBT flag is highly
displayed throughout the month where Gilbert Baker, an American artist, gay
rights activist and U.S. Army veteran, created the flag in 1978 as a new symbol
for the gay and lesbian political movement.
