We Deserve to Celebrate

2022 was a tough year for us. Some failed to achieve their dreams. Others lost their paths. Most were tired. Yet, we fought and stood up. Now that our 365-page story is near to end, we deserve to celebrate.

As we welcome the upcoming year, may we blow all the negativities away, and together, let us celebrate the past and look towards the future with peace and optimism.

Happy New Year!

Christmas is Never Boring

Others expect Christmas to be a season of giving and receiving money or gifts. Others expect Christmas to be a season of seeing colorful decorations and hearing lively noises around the streets. Others expect Christmas to be a season of having presentable food around their tables. Once these expectations are not met, others often utter phrases "Christmas is boring; I can't feel Christmas this year."

Christmas is never boring; it is your idealistic expectations that ruin your Christmas celebration. Sharing, valuing, praying - These what should a Christmas be - a season of sharing things regardless of its value; a season of valuing whatever food is presented on our tables; and a season of praying for the world to heal. More importantly, we celebrate to rejoice the birth of Jesus Christ.

May this Christmas remind us that regardless of our situations in life, may we learn to be blessed enough to bless others. Merry Christmas!

CapSU FORUM spearheads journ training for newly created college publications

by Gay-R Pailon Degala and Chloe Eunice Cabalquinto

To strengthen the newly created college publications of the university, CapSU FORUM initiated the two-day University-based Journalism Seminar with the theme, "College-Based Publication: A comprehensive scope for Campus Journalism,” at the FADC Hall, November 22-23, 2022.

Thirty student journalists participated where 10 students came from the College of Education, Arts and Sciences (COEAS), another 10 from the College of Agriculture and Fisheries (COAF), and an additional 10 from the College of Management (CM).

Dr. Honey Lee E. Casa, the Campus Administrator, said in her opening remarks that the seminar is a manifestation that learning is not limited to the four corners of classrooms.

“Campus Journalism plays a pivotal role in the school. It trains campus journalists to be responsible writers in the exercise of press freedom. It has become an avenue for the youth to hone their skills, to be disciplined, to think critically, and to be the upholders of freedom of the press even at their young age," Dr. Casa added.

On the first day, Prof. John Paul L. Araneta discussed News Writing, Copyreading, and Headline Writing; Prof. Juneth O. Dalida on Sports Writing; Prof. Louis Placido F. Lachica on Feature Writing; Prof. Jeric D. Dayao on Page Design and Layout; and Prof. Andy Bon D. Dariagan on Literary Writing.

Second-day speakers were Prof. Ricaflor R. Avila who shared her expertise in Editorial Writing/Cartooning and Photo Journalism and Mr. Christian John B. Villamor, Editor-in-Chief, discussed the Crafting of Editorial Policy and Constitution and By-Laws.

Prof. Michael Bañas, Student Organizations and Activities Coordinator, pointed out in his closing remarks that press freedom is not just important to democracy; it is democracy itself.

“Without journalists like you, there is no democracy at all. Being a journalist also have a yin and yang, pros and cons, and might be a blessing or a curse. In simple terms, you always have the power but it always comes with great responsibilities," Prof. Bañas explained.

Two-day journalism seminar concluded through participants' impressions, the college publication adviser’s acceptance of responsibilities, and awarding of certificates to promising and most promising writers in the different categories.

KAT holds face-to-face UN Celebration

 By Gar-r Degala

After two years of celebrating virtually the United Nations Month, Katipunan sa Agham-Tao (KAT) spearheads a face-to-face culminating activity at Capiz State University–Pontevedra Campus, on October 27.

Anchored on the theme Our Planet, Our Future, CapSU Pontevedra commemorates responsibilities toward raising global awareness in protecting nature for future generations.

The celebration started with a grand parade around the school campus where students showcased their national costumes.

Prof. Michael Bañas, guest speaker, shared that just like a plant, KAT was a small organization they built before when he was a student leader at the same university, but now, it continues to grow and serves as a platform for raising environmental awareness as this year's UN theme.

"It's so amazing to think that the seed we planted 10 years ago, now prospers and continues to bear fruits. As an educator at alagad ng Katipunan sa Agham-Tao, seeing these future professionals and leaders who strive for excellence, and world stability and learn to respect and collaborate - I can see hope for this country," Prof. Bañas stated.

National Dance Contest hyped the audience with live stage performances from different colleges and departments performing national dance and wearing national costumes of their chosen countries.

Chister Bryll Tidong, KAT President, thank the people who made the celebration successful despite the rainy weather.

"This was never easy, but because of all your support and participation, we made this possible. I thank you all for being here despite the rainy weather we experience. As what Hellen Keller said, alone we can do so little; together, we can do so much," Tidong said in his Words of Gratitude.

Dr. Edwin Daliva, KAT Adviser, stated during his closing remarks that he is beyond delighted to conduct a face-to-face UN celebration again, after two years.

The celebration ended with the announcement of the winners of the National Dance Contest, where CAPEDS of the Bachelor of Physical Education bagged 1st Place followed by the DIWATA of the Bachelor of Secondary Education - Science as the 2nd Placer and Hospitality Management as the 3rd Placer.

Pagtuturo - isang propesyon, bokasyon at misyon;

Dito nasusukat ang tibay, pasensya at determinasyon.

Laba’y sinusuong kahit walang ibang proteksyon

Sabi nga nila, “Teaching is the profession that creates all other professions.”

Mabuhay kayo!

Fearless Moulders

 By Patricia Ann Francisco

Teaching profession is no doubt demanding,

Exerted efforts are stretched for learning,

Adequate tasks are time-consuming.

Cogent ways of educating might be depressing, and

Hortative deadlines are absolutely challenging;

Either way, their hard work will be redeemed by

Revitalizing their learners' dreams and

Stimulating them to gleam.

Articulate as they may seem,

Rich as they are famed,

Expert as they are named;

But behind those aesthetical adjectives,

Repetitive tasks and school works bear them aches,

Ailing their passionate hearts to break.

Valiants in our modern world they are heroes

Educators, teachers, moulders, and mentors, they are called.

SSC, FLP initiate 2-day leadership training

by Nesde June Sasi

The Supreme Student Council and Future Leaders of the Philippines of Capiz State University – Pontevedra Campus organized the two-day leadership training with the theme Paghanas: Strengthening Leadership Success through Synergy amidst Divisive Society at Capiz State University-Pontevedra, September 13-14.

"Convince your followers, not yourself, not your superior, and not your professor, but your followers that you are worthy of being followed. Always remember that leadership is about growing leaders. Your position is just temporary. Sooner or later, you will be replaced with new leaders thus, you have to walk your talk and serve with passion and commitment and a strong sense of responsibility," Dr. Honey Lee E. Casa, the Campus Administrator, pointed out during her opening remarks.

Participants were randomly divided into seven groups called the unity squads to better develop their leadership and collaboration skills. They were tasked to make their unique cheers and yells and hand-made flags using water-based paints to represent their unity squad.

Meanwhile, Dr. Briddo V. Dorado, retired Professor of CapSU Pontevedra, who served as the first speaker of the training, discussed the parliamentary procedure-- what it is all about, how it is done, the different components, and the execution of its basic classification.

Dr. Harold O. Buenvenida, the second speaker, discussed stress management. He encouraged participants to think in a much deeper sense about how they can handle the pressure being thrown by their respective positions in the different organizations they are connected with.

Mr. John Rey Delos Santos, former FLP president, tackled ‘The 21st Century Leaders Adopting New Normal' on the second day of the training.

The team-building activity highlighted the event. With seven stations, the leadership and team collaboration of each unity squad was tested and strengthened. They have to think critically, plan purposively, and act carefully to surpass and gain the highest points possible for each obstacle.

Participating leaders were able to share their insights and reflections about the two-day leadership training. Their takeaways will serve as their guide to effectively function as student leaders.

Dr. Aleta Rose A. Onglatco, the Chair of the Office of Student Services, emphasized in her closing remarks that the true essence of leadership is to empower others to become leaders.

CapSU Forum conducts Gabay Magulang Journalism Outreach

 By Ma. Angeny Joy Villanueva

A total of 32 parents, whose children belong to the Special Program in Journalism, benefited from the Gabay Magulang: A Journalism Outreach Program in Journalism of CapSU Forum in cooperation with Feliciano Yusay Consing National High School held at President Roxas, Capiz, November 22.

The theme of the said activity was “Home School Learning, Parents Make it Happen” which intends to enhance parents’ awareness of the various programs in journalism and to encourage positive parenting practices that promote and support learning goals at home.

Prof. John Paul Araneta, CapSU Forum Adviser, said in a statement, that the activity is part of the CapSU Forum’s mission which is to deliver free basic services in promoting learning and civic engagement.

Helping parents on their role as teachers in this time of pandemic makes them feel valued and guided.    Giving them assistance and orienting them of the important roles they play as parents of students who are enrolled in the Special  Program in Journalism will somehow enable them to be confident in the process of guiding and teaching their respective children.

On the other hand, Mrs. Ellen Aruba, 38, expressed her gratitude to all the prime movers and sponsors of the said event.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Grace de Ado, Head Teacher 1 of FYCNHS also expressed her thanks for the support given to the parents and the school.

Each of the parents received school supplies, with free snacks and lunch.

WHEN A TYPHOON COMES, What should We Do?

 by: By Judylon O. Andalicio

The Philippines' first tropical cyclone for this year 2022 brought a tremendous strike to the province of Capiz. Tropical Depression (TD) Agaton (internationally known as Megi) reportedly claimed the lives of 19 individuals— with one still missing, as of writing; forced more than 250,000 residents to evacuate, incurred almost PHP176 million damages to agriculture, PHP500 million to fishery sector, and PHP59 million to infrastructures said PDRRM officer Judy Grace Pelaez. TD Agaton ravaged the province's 16 towns including its capital Roxas city with widespread, massive and perennial floodings—considered the worst experienced in the province in recent memory. But this is never strange, as our country is averagely visited by more or less 20 typhoons per year. Awareness begets safety. Thus, here are what we should consider in times of such wrath of nature:

BEFORE TYPHOON. According to the Philippine Red Cross (PRC), before any storm, the public is advised to store an adequate supply of food and clean water. Prepare foods that need not be cooked. Keep flashlights, candles, and battery-powered radios within easy reach. Examine your house and repair its unstable parts. Always keep yourself updated with the latest weather report. Harvest crops that can be yielded already. Secure domesticated animals in a safe place. For fisher folk, place boats in a safe area. Should you need to evacuate, bring clothes, first aid kit, candles/flashlight, battery-powered radio, food, etc.

DURING TYPHOON. PRC reiterates that amid the storm everyone is advised to stay inside the house. Always keep yourself updated with the latest weather report. If safe drinking water is not available, boil water for at least 20 minutes. Place it in a container with a cover. Keep an eye on lighted candles or gas lamps. Do not wade through floodwaters to avoid being electrocuted, drowned, and contracting diseases. If there is a need to move to an evacuation center, follow these reminders: Evacuate calmly. Close the windows and turn off the main power switch. Put important appliances and belongings on high ground. Avoid the way leading to the river.

AFTER TYPHOON. Before returning home, wait for authorities to announce that it is safe to go back to your area. Keep away from dangers including structures with damages, fallen trees, and damaged power lines. Give way to rescue and emergency teams. Be extra careful when making repairs at home. Before switching the electricity on, make sure there are no wet or submerged outlets or appliances. Beware of dangerous animals such as snakes that may have entered your house. Check for possible breeding places for mosquitoes and remove rainwater.

Narrating these safety tips may sound cliché, yet it is worth nothing than saving the lives of your family. Safety doesn't happen by an accident—it is learned. Realizing the forestation tips may help minimize the untoward impacts of any future storms not only here in Capiz but also in all typhoon-prone areas in the Philippines.

Tula

Nanay Kong Dakila

Gutom at uhaw man kanyang ipinagpapaliban

Pagod at gutom ma’y patuloy siyang lumalaban

Determinasyon ni ina ay magdamagang umaapas

Tuhod man ay umaalog; mata man ay nandidilim

Hindi namin alintana dahil nariyan si ina;

CapSU fuels international partnership with Indonesia through 14-day virtual program

Text by Christian John Villamor

Capiz State University-Office of External Affairs and Linkages fuels international partnership with Universitas Ahman Dalan-Indonesia through 14-day short course program, spearheaded by UAD-Faculty of Law.

Sixty university students from CapSU-Roxas City, Dayao, Pontevedra, Burias and Dumarao campuses attended virtual Zoom discussion from July 26 to August 15, 2022.
With the theme "Understanding the Laws and Legal Culture in Indonesia", CapSUnians learned Indonesia's political history and its three legal systems: civic law, customary law and Islamic law.
CapSU-EAL emphasized that the recently concluded international program assisted the office in reaching its goal towards producing globally competitive graduates.
"These international privileges pave ways to new learning. While it is expected for the participants who majored in Social Studies to enhance their knowledge on the laws and culture of the Indonesian community, this course expands their perception of the society and appreciate the culture of others. In addition, participants were also expected to have learned teaching pedagogies which are applicable in their own fields", the office stated.
Steven Daradar, a fourth-year education student, elaborated intercultural approach; simplifying depth concept and respect as teaching strategies he acquired throughout the learning process.
"I learned diverse teaching strategies which I can apply as a future educator. First, it is necessary to use intercultural approach where teacher value students' cultural differences. I also learned that simplifying breadth and depth of concepts by using a graphic organizer and flow chart can explain concepts clearly and make things easier to understand. Above all, I learnt that the teaching approach should be 'learner-centered' and 'respect' must be the heart of instruction to provide inclusivity where learners feel safe, belong and free from any judgment", Mr. Daradar explained.
At the end of every discussion, learners are given assignment to answer on electronic learning website provided by UAD-Indonesia.

 Virtual Education Week 2022

COEAS empowers 21st-century molders

 By Christian John B. Villamor

Driven by this year's theme, "Empowering 21st Century Moulders," the College of Education, Arts, and Sciences vested Teacher-Education students through Virtual Education Week, March 2022.

Moulders Society Organization spearheaded virtual programs and contests including Digital Poster Making, Photo Tula, Essay Writing, and COEAS Got Talent.

Dr. Aleta Rose Onglatco, Office of the Student Affairs Chair, pointed out that as Teacher-Education students, to be empowered is to be responsible first of your obligation as a student.

"No matter how updated the curriculum is, how competent the teachers are, how supportive the parents are, how modern the school facilities are, if the students do not take part of the bargain, then everything is useless. Be responsible because by being responsible, you become empowered." Dr. Onglatco quoted.

Moreover, keynote speaker Mr. Joey Descalzota highlighted in his speech the three additional skills needed by 21st century moulders according to the World Economic Forum: Analytical thinking or the ability of teachers to determine facts from limitless information such as fake news; active learning or teaching strategies to make students participate in the virtual classroom; and resilience, stress tolerance and flexibility.

Winners of different contests, together with their majors labelled beside their names are as follows: Digital Poster Making 1st Place - Joebel Diawara (Social Studies) 2nd Place - Rhea Mae Dala (Filipino) 3rd Place - Shaira Blancaflor (Physical Education) Photo Tula 1st Place - Jessica Besa (Mathematics) 2nd Place - Ronald Paderes (Mathematics) 3rd Place - Jessie Maido (Filipino) Essay Writing 1st Place - Jomalene Dacles (Filipino) 2nd Place - Christy Bataican (English) 3rd Place - Kyla Mae Villareal (Filipino) COEAS Got Talent 1st Place - Renante Igdanes Jr. and Joshua Anto (Filipino) 2nd Place - Erica Buenavista and Vashti Marie Patricio (Physical Education).
